About Shirley, Suffolk County, NY

Shirley is a community in the Town of Brookhaven. It is located on the south shore of Long Island. The town was named after the developer Walter T Shirley. Shirley’s company in the 1950s built four-room homes. Starting price for each unit was $4,700.

The Mastic-Shirley Island Rail Road serves Shirley Island. The Island is served by one bridge from the mainland of Long Island: Smith Point Bridge.The 7th Precinct of Suffolk County Police Department is situated in Shirley. Northern part of Shirley is served by the Longwood Central School District. The Southern Part is served by the William Floyd School District.

Geography
Shirley is located at latitude point 40°47’49″N and longitude point 72°52’16″W. The CDP has a total area of 30.8 square kilometers(11.9 square miles). The area covered by land is 29.7 square kilometers (11.5 square miles). The area covered by water is 1.1 square kilometers(0.42 square miles) approximately 3.63% of the total land area.

Demographics
The population of Shirley as per the 2000 census was 26,395 people, 6,176 families and 7,353 households. The population density of the CDP was 2,282.5 per square mile. 89.69% of the population was comprised of Whites, 3.33% of them were African American, 0.32% comprised of the Native Americans, 1.23% was made up of Asians 0.03% Pacific islanders, Hispanics and Latins of any race formed 10.82% and 2.84% were other races.

In the 7,353 households, 47.2% of the households had children under the age of 18 living in them. 64.4% of the households had married couples living with the children, 13.8% had a single parent setup with no husband present. 16.0% had non families living in them. 11.6% of the house were made up of single individuals and 3.8% of them had a person above the age of 65 living inside.
