About Hauppauge, Suffolk County, NY

Hauppauge is a town situated on Long Island, inside Suffolk County. Geographically speaking, it’s in the western third of Suffolk County, which covers most of the eastern portion of the island, as well as some of the center. Hauppauge actually sits very close to the geographic center of the entirety of Long Island, both in terms of east to west and north to south.

Hauppauge is just under 11 square miles in size. Its name is derived from a Native American word that translates as ‘sweet waters’. This is because indigenous peoples would gather fresh drinking water here, since they considered the waters of nearby Lake Ronkonkoma undrinkable. Hauppauge is known for having a high underground water table and subsurface water springs.

At the time of writing, the last federal census had taken place in 2010. It counted 20,882 total people across 5,623 families and 7,333 households. The population density was just under 2,000 per square mile. Caucasians accounted for nearly 90 percent of the population.

A third of households had kids younger than 18 living at home, and two-thirds of homes were married couples that were living together.

The area is not known for having many popular attractions, as the community is highly residential and a bedroom community for those commuting to and from New York City. Many businesses here close early each day, and a number of commercial structures are actually abandoned or out of use. The school system, while small, is highly touted and renown by residents. Youth and families, especially those that play hockey or like other activities on the ice, are known to frequent The Rinx, which is a recreational center.

The primary roadway running close to town is the Interstate 495 highway. It’s also known as the Long Island Expressway. Running east and west, it connects most of Long Island. In light to low traffic, residents can typically get to New York City in about an hour or so.
