More About Commack, Suffolk County, NY

Commack is a hamlet in the towns of Smithtown and Huntington found in Suffolk County, NYC, on Long Island, United States. Commack’s population is roughly more than 36, 124 with more than 12, 138 housing units. As of 2010, the CDP’s racial makeup was 91.6% White, 5.4% Asian, 0.1% Alaska Native or Native American, 0.9% African American, 0.01% other Pacific Islander or Native Hawaiian, 0.8% from another race, and around 1.2% from two or more races. 4.8% of the population were Latino or Hispanic of any race.

The population was spread out in the CDP with 26.0% below the age of 18, 6.2% between 18 and 24, 21.5% between 25 and 44, 29.5% between 45 and 64, and 16.8% who had 65 years of age and more. There were 94.1 males for every 100 females. About 2.9% of the population and 2.1% of families were living below the poverty line.

The Commack Methodist Church located in Commack is the oldest Methodist Church building found in the entire New York state. Brooklyn Nets, originally known as New York Nets, performed its second season (around 1968-69) at the famous Long Island Arena found in Commack. The arena was later demolished in 1996 and is currently the location of a shopping center that has Target stores and Hobby Lobby. Located in Commack’s Suffolk Y Jewish Community Center is the National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame and Museum.

Commack is also home to the Commack Fire Department, which celebrated its centennial back in 2006. In 2016, there was a 50th-anniversary celebration for the Commack Volunteer Ambulance Corps. Like most unincorporated areas found in Long Island, Commack doesn’t have a true, walkable Main Street or downtown. Generally, the community has four main thoroughfares: the at-grade Jericho Turnpike, the Sunken Meadow State Parkway, the Northern State Parkway, and the Long Island Expressway. It also comprises the Long Island Motor Parkway.
