About Stony Brook, NY
Stony Brook is located in the Town of Brookhaven. The village is a hamlet meaning that is not incorporated and relies on proximal governments to provide services to them. The village can be found on the Northern Shore of Long Island. The whole area is under Suffolk County, in the state of New York.
It was initially an agricultural area during the colonial period. It then started to grow rapidly as it became a resort town. It has continued its growth as a resort town that it is presently known as a major tourist town. It is also an area that has been known for its academic excellence with academic centers of excellence.
Geography
The area is on the Northern Shore of Long Island, it is 55 miles due east from Manhattan. The area is irregular and occupies an area 5 miles North to South and a mile from east to west. Stony Brook traces its initial development roots from the Stony Brook Harbor from the 17th century.
Demographics
As of the population census statistics of 2010, the area had 13,727 people, 3,787 families and 4,758 households. The racial makeup of the CDP was, 88.6% of the population was comprised of Whites, 14.4% from two or more races. 7.5% of the population was Asian, 4.4% were Hispanics ir Latins of any race, 1.7% of the people were African American, 0.25% of the population were from other races, 0.1% were Native Americans and 0.01% were the Pacific Islanders. The population density of the area was 2.390.5 persons for every square mile.
The age brackets were spread out. 26.9% were people under the age of 18. 5.8% were aged between 18 and 24, 28.1% were aged between 25 and 44. 26.5% were between 45 and 65. 12.7% of the people were 65 years and above.
