Located in Suffolk County, New York, St. James is a hamlet on Long Island’s North Shore. It is considered to be part of the town of Smithtown and is located in the east part of the town. The total area of St. James is 4.5 square miles.

History

St. James was once a popular destination for celebrities. Stars like Irving Berlin and Buster Keaton frequently spent their summers in the town. While the town receives less attention from stars now, it has had other famous residents, including Mick Foley and John Petrucci.

The town is home to The St. James General Store, which is the United States’ oldest continuously-operated general store. It was registered as a historic location in the 1970s.
