About Port Jefferson, Suffolk County, Long Island

The beautiful waterfront town of Port Jefferson is located on Long Island, Suffolk County, New York. Originally settled as a rural town in the 1600s it is informally known as ‘Port Jeff’. By the 1800s it had become a shipbuilding center and many of the buildings and homes still standing in Port Jefferson today belonged to shipbuilders and prominent sailors in the area. The Village Center was formerly a shipyard where shipbuilders built ships that were immediately launched into Long Island Sound.

Today Port Jefferson is a popular tourist spot in Long Island where the sound of the Long Island Ferry and the smell of salt in the air is never too far in the distance. Thanks to the Port Jefferson Steamboat Company and Bridgeport, it is also a well-established transport hub that transports hundreds of passengers to Connecticut and back again each day.

According to the 2010 United States Census, Port Jefferson had a population of 7,750 with 3,090 households and 1,975 families living in the village at the time. 27.8 households had children aged under 18 and 52% were married couples who were living together. 28% of households had individuals living on their own and 9% were people older than 65 and living alone. Family average size was 2.96 and household average size was 2.40.

The quickest and easiest way to get to Port Jefferson from Connecticut is via the Bridgeport and Port Jefferson Steamboat company where it takes just over an hour by ferry to cross to Long Island Sound. You can reach the town by taking either the Middle County Route 25 or Nesconset Highway 347 and travel north on Route 112 or you can take the Long Island Expressway via Exit 64 and travel to the end of Route 112. You can also be dropped off at the Port Jefferson Station by LIRR and take a taxi to the village about 9 miles away.

Although Port Jefferson is busiest in summer, large crowds are also drawn to unique events like The Charles Dickens Festival held every December. The town is not only popular for its beautiful views from the waterfront, but also for great places to shop, dine, swim or fish. It is a pet and kid-friendly town so the whole family can enjoy exploring the local spots. There are several theatres and art galleries within walking distance of each other like the famed Theatre Three, the best small theatre in town where you can take in a local Broadway show. Apart from an excursion on the ferry, you can spend the day fishing on the Sound or charter a boat to the open seas.
